What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
