Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
