The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze Following Celebrations
On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "critical" level.
Extremely High Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the capital recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to ten times the recommended limit established by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable standards.
Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Developments
Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that covers the capital as winter sets in.
Nevertheless recently, the newly elected local government approached the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Judicial Verdict and Enforcement
To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, judges agreed to the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific hours throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the city, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital registered air quality spiking around midnight to some of the worst measurements observed during celebrations in at least three years.
Regional Effects
Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also initiated a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the celebrations.
Long-Standing Environmental Crisis
Alarmingly severe concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a serious issue for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Near celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to 70% higher the worst levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

The situation in Delhi is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the city as colder air sets in.
Public Health and Financial Impact
Public health and economic toll on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple research.
These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in cancer.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 untimely mortalities per year in the city.
