The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at 81 Years Old
The world mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and performer whose distinctive voice played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. He has died at the age of 81.
“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his supporters around the world, please know that your encouragement was his strength during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit brought him a vast and longstanding following.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a landmark of Jamaican cinema.
He was among the select few of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
