The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Instance in 25 Years.
Following 25 long years, every region of the state is experiencing water scarcity. This landmark event arrives after grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated wildfire risks and strained its huge agribusiness.
A Map Reveals Zero Abnormally Dry Areas
Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that all of California is clear of drought or abnormal dryness. This shift resulted from weeks of above-normal rainfall that topped up major reservoirs like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their historic averages.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations
The journey here included powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, leading to significant overflow, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were deemed unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January finally erased those remaining dry spots.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern
However, authorities caution that drought-free conditions does not mean being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation place it at roughly seven-tenths of the average for this date.
This mountain snow, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for the year ahead. Hydrology managers stress that it is too early to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.
“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”
While the drought map shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to preserving this hard-won hydrological health for the rest of the year.
