Rybakina claimed the largest prize in WTA history by beating world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets at the tournament.

The 26-year-old delivered a stunning performance to overcome four-time Grand Slam champion her opponent in two sets in the host country.

Because each competitor came through the tournament without a loss, the purse on the table was a historic almost £4 million – the highest prize offering in women's tennis history.

The prize money surpasses the £3.74m Sabalenka earned for winning the New York major, which was the most lucrative major tournament in the current year.

The champion, who was the world number six, delivered sixteen winners during a impressive first-set display.

The 2022 Wimbledon winner saved two break points before taking all four points in the sixth game to take the break and held her serve to win the first set.

As the second set progressed, Sabalenka defended two break points at four-all to shift the balance in her favor.

However, having worked so hard to upset Rybakina's rhythm, the top seed let her opponent off the hook by wasting two set points in the following game to level the set at 5-5.

Her inability to level the match impacted her tie-break play, with the Kazakh winning every point to take home the title.

This win, Rybakina's sixth over Sabalenka, means Rybakina will rise one place in the WTA rankings to fifth in the world.

A distraught the runner-up was seen crying as she sat with her coaching team shortly after the match.

"That was not the best display from me today but Elena you were definitely the superior player," Sabalenka told the crowd.

"You really overpowered me out of the court. I'm pleased to see you at your peak. Celebrate this beautiful title."
