Weather experts are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," said the weather service.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are due to be low, so additional clothing essential, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Issued

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this signified the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
