The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback
One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward.
