Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
