Line of Duty Announced for Seventh Season on BBC
The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The previous series concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."
He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.
The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.
However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
