Far-Right Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming Head of State.
Following a conclusive final ballot, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Commanding Triumph
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Known for his strong Catholic views and regard for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly centered on promises to combat growing insecurity and significantly restrict migration.

This political landscape could challenge his policy goals, such as a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.
"There are many aspects about how a Kast government will look like that we don't know because he has not explained how he will do them," commented a political science expert.
The professor added, "In terms of economic policy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures associated with the right-wing. However the area with far less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the campaign."
