The remains of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been located inside freezers in an apartment in western Austria.

The deceased, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been missing for several months, were detected on the end of last week. The freezers were placed behind a false wall in the flat, located in the city of Innsbruck.

Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his 53-year-old brother, were arrested in the month of June. The older man, a work associate of the female victim, stated to authorities last week that there had been an accident—but denied homicide.

Speaking to reporters recently, a representative for the state prosecutor stated the pair were being kept in custody on "serious suspicion of murder".

Personal details of those concerned have not been released by law enforcement, in accordance with national regulations.

The family's disappearance was originally brought to light by the female victim's relative, who resides in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Police said the woman's colleague claimed at the time she had embarked on an extended trip with her child to travel to her relatives in Turkey.

Her bank card was then noted as being active abroad several times.

Yet when investigators searched the victim's residence, her smartphone was located.

An individual also reported overhearing a commotion in the flat, and cries of "mum" on the occasion the two were thought to have disappeared.

A broader police investigation was initiated, with authorities finding various messages originating from the mother's device—among them a job termination message to her employer and communications to the male associate.

Law enforcement said a four-figure sum was also transferred to the individual.

Katja Tersch stated to media representatives on recently that a rented space had been secured before the vanishing and a cooling unit had been placed there.

The male siblings removed the appliance from the unit on the date the victims vanished, Tersch stated. And a seven days after, they obtained another freezer.

Authorities believe they believe this points to the demise were intentionally orchestrated.

"The cause of death remains unclear due to the advanced decay of the remains," the official said.

Mayr—of the public prosecutor's office—noted the precise timeline is yet to be determined, but the remains were carefully placed and not discovered during a prior examination.

While the brothers were detained in June, it was only on the 12th of November that the 55-year-old confessed to an incident and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any plan to cause death, officials said.

Meanwhile, his brother admitted to a attempt to hide evidence but disputed knowledge of a homicide.

The pair are currently in custody awaiting trial in prisons in Innsbruck and Salzburg, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

Via a shared communication, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister declared the "alleged double murder... constitutes the abrupt and violent termination of two individuals and reveals a cruel system".

"Female individuals are being killed due to the mere fact that they are female," they went on to say.

"Femicides are a profoundly embedded and issue affecting all of society that we must fight resolutely."
