Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder States Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he will independently develop this new flavor within a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the continuing disagreement among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed that Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Support
Mr. Cohen revealed through an Instagram video how he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism plus Current Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming product line will be created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which originally created several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, citing worries regarding how its independence was undermined after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
