A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “six-seven” – originating from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
