A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
